How to cut your dog's nails at home, step by step

Claws that are too long cause your dog to put improper pressure on their paw, and they can break or dig into the pad. Many dogs wear them down on their own by walking on asphalt, but others need a trim every few weeks. With patience and the right tool, it can be done at home.

When should they be trimmed?

A clear sign: if you hear their claws clicking on the floor at home, they are too long. When the dog is standing, the claw should not touch the floor. Don't forget the dewclaw, the toe on the inner part of the leg, which does not touch the floor and does not wear down.

Be careful with the sensitive area

Inside the claw, there is an area with blood vessels and nerves. If you cut it, it will hurt and bleed.

  • Clear claws: you can see a pink area. Cut a few millimeters before it.
  • Dark claws: you cannot see it. Cut very little each time and look at the center of the cut: when a darker, wetter spot appears, stop.

Nail clippers or electric nail file?

  • A nail clipper with a safety guide is quick, and the guide helps prevent cutting too much.
  • An electric nail file wears down the claw gradually. It is slower, but the risk of reaching the sensitive area is lower and it leaves the edge rounded. It is a good option for nervous dogs or dogs with dark claws.

Step by step

  1. Choose a quiet time and a well-lit place.
  2. Hold the paw firmly but without squeezing, and separate the toe with your thumb.
  3. Cut the tip at an angle, following the natural curve of the claw. Several small cuts are better than one large one.
  4. If you use a file, hold it against each claw for a few seconds and let it rest so it doesn't overheat.
  5. Reward after each paw, or even after each claw at first.

If your dog won't let you

  • First, get them used to you touching their paws for several days without cutting anything.
  • Show them the tool, let them smell it, and reward them. With the file, turn it on near them so they get used to the sound.
  • Cut one or two claws a day if necessary: it doesn't have to be all at once.

If you cut too much

Stay calm. Apply pressure with a clean gauze pad for a few minutes or use styptic powder. If the bleeding does not stop or the claw has broken, consult your veterinarian.

If your dog is still very stressed after trying, a dog groomer or your veterinarian can do it for you. You can find nail clippers, files, and other grooming products in Cleaning and Care.
